The new DSI polymer coating is capable of handling both highly acidic, corrosive mine water solutions, as well as Sodium Hydroxide 50% or less, hydrochloric acid 36% or less and sulfuric acid 32% or less. The testing was performed at the extremes to identify weaknesses. All of the acids or bases listed are not seen in nature above 30% concentration and even that is a rarity.

This type of corrosive ground is not unique to the mining industry. These conditions are very harsh at pH levels of 1.8 at concentrations of 15%. This causes a veriety of conditions. Many mines have corrosive locations and require long term solutions, this has been tested and shown to function using DSI’s Obduro AP coating. It has extended the life of mine support by 1200% lengths and climbing.

The mining industry’s traditional preference for protective coatings in corrosive environments, due to cost considerations, has been to apply galvanized and epoxy coatings. As a result of extreme pH levels and the limitations of current products, a new coating has been developed to withstand severe conditions. Harsh chemicals and corrosive groundwater pose added challenges to mines in maintaining long term ground support which demands continuous rehabilitation. This paper highlights the challenges and identifies a solution by applying a new economic coating to DSI’s plates and bolts, specifically the Omega BoltTM that withstands the most corrosive of conditions. As a result of extreme pH levels and the limitations of current products, a new coating has been developed to withstand severe conditions. Harsh chemicals and corrosive groundwater pose added challenges to mines in maintaining long term ground support which demands continuous rehabilitation.
