This system is used primarily to map mine roofs allowing the mine to study voids. A roof map is a graphic representation of sensor outputs displayed to represent the make up of a mine roof and voids in that roof. A void for the purpose of this paper is any separation of roof strata, regardless of width. The ability to detect voids during production drilling is only one benefit of adding electronics to production roof bolters. The electronics give the roof bolter the ability to detect and react quickly to subtle changes in drilling parameters that an operator would miss or not have time to react to. By drilling manufactured voids and various materials in a lab environment with an electronic feedback system, sensor trends were recognized. The electronic feedback system was programmed to react to these trends and make immediate adjustments. to the drilling parameters to improve both the safety and the productivity of the operator. The feature, known as "VOID DETECT", has been successfully used on various production drills since 1992, After successfully improving the drilling by electronically detecting and reacting to voids, the possibility of using this data to map the roof was realized. |
